Last year, I started a new annual property, besides the language-based lists. I called it Milliblog India Top 10 (the list from 2012) and with some comparisons between how Raja’s and Rahman’s career panned out, promptly landed the post into some pointless controversy. Let me avoid any such comparison this year – last year, it made some sense given a soundtrack from Ilayaraja topped by Tamil list; this year, such complexities don’t exist.
So, again, why this list? Simple – to break the language barrier. The reasoning is, if I was a reader of Milliblog, I’d love to know how the top 10 songs of 2013 would stack up, if there was no language barrier, since all lists in Milliblog are in order of preference (there are no random order lists in Milliblog!). The Milliblog annual music round-up is, of course, here, if you missed it.
That list is here – my top 10 songs from 2013, if India was a country with no language break-up! There is a caveat though – this is as pan-Indian as I can listen to music, as an individual – there is still no representation from languages like Punjabi, Bengali etc. Eventually, I do hope to make it better!
Since some of the songs are not available on YouTube, I’m adding individual links for listening as against a single playlist, though, even YouTube links are detrimental to songs like the title song of Andar Baahar from Kannada with corny picturization and have me assuming that it is better heard than seen.
