Milliblog’s Top Recent Listens – March 2015

Hindi

Teri khushbu – Mr.X (Hindi – Jeet Ganguli)

Bach ke Bakshy, Calcutta Kiss & Jaanam – Detectve Byomkesh Bakshy (Hindi – Sneha Khanwalkar, Madboy/Mink & Peter Cat Recording Co.)

Desi look – Ek Paheli Leela (Hindi – Dr.Zeus)

Janib – Dilliwali Zaalim Girlfriend (Hindi – Jatinder Shah)

Tamil

Yenindha paarvaigal – Rajathandhiram (Tamil – G V Prakash Kumar)
GVP uses an intoxicating combo of guitar and accordion to great effect in this feathery soft melody – when GVP and his wife Saindhavi sing a duet, you can be assured that it’ll be that way. There’s a hint of the Middle Eastern somewhere here too, as also a small’ish Latino twang in the guitar in between.

Mental manadhil & Parandhu sella vaa – O Kadhal Kanmani (Tamil – A R Rahman)

Vaaya veera & Motta paiya – Kanchana 2 (Tamil – Leon James & Thaman S)

Ethanai kavignan & Penne penne – Savaale Samaali (Tamil – Thaman S)

Dandanakka, Thoovaanam, Idarkuthaane aasapattaai & Arakki – Romeo Juliet (Tamil – D.Imman)

Karuppu nerathazhagi – Komban (Tamil – G V Prakash Kumar)

Telugu

Punnami puvai – Rudramadevi (Telugu – Ilayaraja)

Jil jil jil & Poor masala poori – Jil (Telugu – Ghibran)

Malayalam

Mazhamukile – Saaradhi (Malayalam – Gopi Sundar)
The kind of song Gopi can compose off the fly. It does start off very differently, for the kind of pleasant melody it turns out to be eventually. Najim Irshad and Mridhula Warrier are fantastic with the vocals, and Gopi consciously keeps the backgrounds minimal, but that all-along violin base is enchanting!

Manassil aayiram & Pularoli – Bhaskar The Rascal (Malayalam – Deepak Dev)
Afsal sounds a LOT like Mano in Manassin aayiram, a great sing-along’ish song with a fantastic kids chorus. Vijay Yesudas is in his impeccable form in Pularoli, but Deepak’s chorus again hits the bulls-eye here – thoroughly endearing!

Saarangiyil, Azhalinte & Chiriyude pinnil (both versions) – You Too Brutus (Malayalam – Roby Abraham)
The songs, on SoundCloud.

Chirakurummi, Raavin nizhaloram & Swapnachirakil – Nellikka (Malayalam – Bijibal)

Arike pozhiyum – 100 Days of Love (Malayalam – Govind Menon)

Kaikottum kandittila, Neelambalin & Enne thallendammaava – Oru Vadakkan Selfie (Malayalam – Shaan Rahman)

Malarvaga kombathu & Nilavum mayunnu – Ennum Eppozhum (Malayalam – Vidyasagar)

Choolamittu & Ummarathe – Ivan Maryadaraman (Malayalam – Gopi Sundar)

Kannada

Maleye maleye – Male (Kannada – Jassie Gift)
Barring the fact that Maleye sounds dangerously like Thaman’s Eeram number ‘Mazhaye mazhaye’ (Oh man!!), this is a lovely song by Jassie Gift!

Neene neene – Ranavikrama (Kannada – V.Harikrishna)
Hari’s backgrounds lift this otherwise regular track to a new high. Puneeth is in his usual form singing it, but it is Palak Muchhal, sounding a bit like Shreya and wonderfully sweet too!

Marathi

Samjena – Runh (Marathi – Sangeet Siddharth)
The very dependable Nandini Srikar and a cracking melody, that for some reason brought Viju Shah to my mind (I have no idea why!). Lovely song!

Yeh dil & Jai malhari – Chitrafit 3.0 Megapixel (Marathi – Yug Bhusal)
There’s something very, very Ilayaraja’ish in Yeh dil. I have never heard about this composer but the flair with which he handles the jazzy elements and the superb tune is exemplary. Vijay Prakash is an asset to the song too, as always. The other song in this soundtrack – Jai malhari – is a great listen too, particularly the way Yug handles the main hook and the backgrounds he embellishes it with.
