Three weekends of back-to-back Milliblog Weeklies is a rarity these days Good times for good music!
Koi Naa – Bhool Chuk Maaf (Tanishk Bagchi & Gifty) – Hindi: A really sweet tune that gets better because of the singing by Harnoor, and especially Shreya Ghoshal who rules the lower notes.
Khudaya Ishq, Doriyaan – Abir Gulaal (Amit Trivedi) – Hindi: Whoa, a new Hindi album with all songs by Amit Trivedi launches in one go? And it stars Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor! The whole album is pleasantly listenable but the two songs that worked for are these two. Khudaya Ishq does sound like a pastiche of a few other Amit’s own songs. For instance, the opening line, ‘Laakh Sitaaro Ki Ek Thi Dua’ sounds a lot like Iktara’s ‘Sun Rahi Hoon Sudbudh Khoke Koi Main Kahaani’. And ‘Mere Dil Ke Lafz Churaake, Kehti Hain Nazar Deewani’, with the accent on ‘Kehti Hain’ made me automatically sing, ‘O Mere Humraahi Mere Baanh Thaame Chalna’ from… do I even need to mention it? But with Arijit and Shilpa’s wonderful singing, this song just effortlessly flows. Doriyaan is Arijit and Shreya’s show, on the other hand! I really liked how Amit amped up the second interlude as against the milder first one. Excellent use of the trumphet in this song.
Jinguchaa – Thug Life (A R Rahman) – Tamil: Ebullient, joyous song that joins the long list of wedding songs by Maniratnam and Rahman – it seems like one of Mani’s favorite song situations! Think Roja’s Rukkumani, Bombay’s KaNNaalane, Dil Se’s Jiya Jale, Alai Payuthey’s Yaaro Yaarodi, and Kaatru Veliyidai’s Saarattu Vandiyile. I think Mani started using this situation only after he moved to Rahman, from Ilayaraja since his films before Roja don’t seem to have this song situation. While Vaishali Samant and Shakthisree Gopalan rule the vocals, Adithya RK makes a solid impact too! Also, more than the song, I was trying to guess the plot of the film My guess: exploring the situation if Nayakan’s Surya (played by Nizhalgal Ravi) did not die and worked alongside his father (Velu Naicker) as a don/gangster/thug. So, Kamal continues his Nayakan role while STR plays his son. Let’s see!
Aachaley – Tourist Family (Sean Roldan) – Tamil: The second song this April that features composer Sean Roldan dancing to his own song, after Kalyana Kalavaram from Love Marriage. This one’s passably fun, and catchy enough!
Love Detox, Edharkaga Marubadi – Retro (Santhosh Narayanan) – Tamil: Love Detox is such an un-Santhosh sound, but is a banger no less! It reminded me of Rahman’s Aiyo Pathikichu to some extent, in terms of the unusual structure and rhythm. Punya Selva’s singing is top notch, and Suriya’s vocals was a pleasant surprise! Punya Selva sounds completely different in Edharkaga Marubadi, though the tune is vintage Santhosh, with its wavy ebbs and lows. Did I notice a Chaarukesi raaga strain in this song?
Minnalvala – Narivetta (Jakes Bejoy) – Malayalam: Jakes imports his Telugu sound to Malayalam and has an easy winner here! Sid Sriram is a great choice to handle that joyous ‘Minnalvala’ hook!
Kunnirangi Varavunde – Hathane Udaya (SanDy) – Malayalam: The kind of song that made me sit up and wonder who the composer is!! Besides the haunting melody that I felt was based on Malayamarutham raaga, Sandy has some fantastic chorus elements too, like that ‘Kannippenninu Kalyaanam Kainiraye Pookkula’! And this is perhaps the best song by Vaikom Vijayalakshmi in recent times, considering how stereotyped her voice has been.
