Vaazhndhu Paaru, Iragey, Iragey Reprise, Ore Vaanam – Tourist Family (Sean Roldan) – Tamil: Besides Mugai Mazhai and Aachaley, there’s enough in Tourist Family’s soundtrack that makes this one of Sean’s recent best (much like how Retro is easily one of Santhosh Narayanan’s recent best, as an overall soundtrack). In Vaazhndhu Paaru, Sean aims for an intentional retro-Raja sound and pulls it off really well by also fusing more modern elements like that superb electric guitar layer. And S.P.Charan is the perfect fit to evoke his legendary dad’s memory to accentuate the retro feel. Iragey gains tremendously from Sean’s cohesive, harmonic sound, Vijay Yesudas’s soulful singing, as also Mohan Rajan’s meaningful lyrics. Sean offers a lovely difference between Iragey and its reprise sung by Venkatramanan. If the former was held by its strings’ appeal, the reprise is held together by the piano beautifully. The surprise of the album is Ore Vaanam, sung really well by Yuvan Shankar Raja. To be sure, it’s a sacharine sweet melody that could have become painfully templatized, but Sean infuses it with a solid rhythm and uptempo sound that it turns out to be a great listen!
Thirudi – Kiss (Jen Martin) – Tamil: The lucky combo of Kavin and Jen Martin again, and they get a great melody to kickstart the album! Anirudh, as a singer, seems to be all over this week’s Weeklies Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view. But his vocals make a difference to this song.
Hridayam Lopala – Kingdom (Anirudh) – Telugu: A predictably Anirudh style song that effortlessly takes you back to Doctor’s ‘So Baby’. It’s an engaging listen nonetheless, thanks to Anumita Nadesan’s captivating vocals.
Thanu – Hit – 3 (Mickey J Meyer) – Telugu: A pleasant surprise from Mickey! He produces a smashing soul-based melody that Anirudh truly blows with his stupendous swagger in the singing that is perfect for this genre!
Hope Song – Sarkeet (Govind Vasantha) – Malayalam: A very-Govind Vasantha melody that you can identify almost instantly! While Kapil Kapilan does expectedly well, it is the additional/chorus (Aavani Malhar, Ajmal Fathima Parveen, Angel Mary Joseph, and Sony Mohan) that lends the extra that makes this song even more enjoyable.
Chal Re Mana Jaau – Ata Thambaycha Naay (Gulraj Singh) – Marathi: What a gorgeous melody by one of the most underrated composers of our times! The soothing sufi-style melody harks back to A R Rahman’s musical style, but Gulraj truly owns it and crafts it beautifully. The first musical interlude (I couldn’t identify the instrument) mid-way through the song is pure magic! The male version by Gulraj himself is excellent too, but the true winner is Nihira Joshi Deshpande’s original version! She’s outstanding!
Aankhon – Dhvani x OAFF x Savera (Hindi/Indipop): I’m tempted to say that OAFF (Kabeer Kathpalia) & Savera (Mehta)’s is fast getting a bit too predictable, but for now, it continues to work. They have a way of adding a charming retro style in the sound that seems to click more often than not.
